Kinnaur

About the place

Kinnaur is remote mountainous district between Shimla and the Tibetan border. The region was de-restricted in 1991 and travel to and arround Kinnaur is now possible with easy-to-obtain permits. Kinnaur is drained by the Sutlej river, which flows from close to Mt Kailash in Tibet.

The region is flanked by the central Himalaya to the east. To the north is the formidable Zansker range, dividing Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal & Tibet. The most spectacular peak here is Kinnaur Kailash (6050 m) which lords over the beautiful Sangla Valley.

The region is home to the Kinnauri tribal group and Aryan people who have always regarded themselves as distinct from other Indians. Most Kinnauries follow a mixture of Hiduism and Tibetan Buddhism and villages often have both Hindu and Buddhist temples.
